Along with established ethical theories and
rules in our society, flaws and uncertainty are inevitable to happen in the community.
As the scope of this laws and basis become wider and bigger, the box can’t
anymore contain excess baggage. Technology in particular contributes great complexity
to this matter that should be dealt with experts. Contemporary information
technology problems are one of the mainstream issues in this modern age which our
society’s moral guidelines can hardly distinguish the existence and clear view
of the issue from the existing morals. In this article I would list and discuss
several contemporary information technology issues nowadays and give some ideal
solutions to the issues anchored to the ethical theories.
To start with, let talk about the issues
aligned with social networking sites. This issue could be the most popular
debates in this modern era. Lots of areas in social networking site seem to be unclear
to the moral guidelines. Like creating and posting memes, it is unclear to some
if it’s really morally right to create or post memes of personalities and
celebrities thought this is just for fun but some of these personalities thought
this as harassment and bullying. Though persons
creating memes could be thought ethical in the concept of Egoism and Consequentialism,
but it also breaks privacy and morality of the personality. Ethical in egoism in
the sense that it made the creator happy of what she’s/he’s doing and consequentialism
in the sense that the creator disregard the feeling of the celebrities as long as
viewers could relate and make fun on that meme, thus it has good goal to make every
people happy. To tie up these
differences, the persons who want to create or post meme should have approved
rights from the personalities or celebrates before doing it. In means, if
creating meme is necessity or essential in making peoples happy and joy, these
could be legalized to have meme creator in this sense anything will be done is
approved. Moreover, this adds new job for memes creator enthusiast. Thus, the solution
implies Utilitarianism to the side of the personality where he/she approve to
use his image for the happiness and joy of more people and by doing so, he/she
gives new job for professional meme creator. In the world of social networking,
we could find more uncertainty to moral guidelines like public post of nudity image,
explicit comments to wall post, illegal hopping of personal information and
many more. Social networking has still wide area for improvement in moral guidelines
and this should be dealt by experts.
Second issue is all about internet access.
Internet now is one of the necessities for communication and processing. Thought by having internet connection in transferring
classified or important data is safer than carrying it to the destination but it’s
not. Internet communications are monitored by Internet Service Providers (i.e.
ISP) where our data and information can be access by them anytime they want.
ISP has the power to collect private data from us that means they break our
rights of privacy. By breaking the privacy, we could also gain advantage on it.
Through ISP we could monitor terrorist attacks by tracing communication and
other treat to our country. In this case, the best solution for the issue of
privacy is to turn over the steering wheel of ISP to the government sector, since
commonly ISP is a private sector. In this solution, the personal privacy is not
still solved but the advantage of it is that government can now fully access directly
the data to trace and monitor terrorism to protect the fellow countrymen. Thus, this act is Utilitarianism since it risks
personal data to help the country from bad elements.
The last issue I will talk is about internet
piracy. Piracy on internet is very common nowadays; we could download movies,
music, data, and others for free from pirate website even its originally for
sale. Most hackers believe that it’s worth the hack since services and prices
of content or product are enormous and unreasonable for customers. I myself
quite agree with hackers, since I’m not satisfied most of the product prices
and services. Thought this could be solved by at least make the product
improved with cheap prices for us customers could be convinced to apply the
service. Thus by doing so, utilitarianism is applied since having improved
product in cheap price while satisfying customers is an act of utilitarian.
In conclusion, in most of the issues in
contemporary information technology the root of all issues is that data and
personal information are readily opened and can now be easily access by anyone
without strong restrictions in this modern era. Therefore ethical expert should focus improving
and recreating ethical theories that will adopt the modern changes.
